CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Pudding Charlotte ; will only be giving out her given name to start.
Age: 16
Canon: One Piece

World Description:
History:
Death: [ ITN-Original death; not canon. ] After Pudding kisses Sanji, then steals his memory of the event and flees to prevent him from wanting to stay with her or take her with him, she remains in her "disguise" cloak and runs blindly through the alleys of Cacao Island. As Sanji and his allies are fighting Big Mom's forces, in the commotion, Pudding is mistaken for a fleeing enemy and shot once through the heart by a random chess soldier. She dies instantly.

What are your plans for this character in-game? One of Pudding's first responses to learning she is dead, after the shock, will be to cheer with hysterical glee: she's not under her mother's control anymore and doesn't have to spend every moment of her life pretending, obeying, and lying to herself as much as to others. I'm excited to explore her development after the jolt of Sanji's kindness already tripping her up into rollercoaster personality/mood swings, especially without the towering oversight of her tyrannical mother. She's going to have to completely relearn who she actually is, and is going to have serious difficulty with the real and false aspects of her own personality and identity (and which are which!) She'll also be torn between lifelong distrust of Literally Everyone and kindnesses shown from Beacon residents who look even stranger than she does. Warring with herself over whether her third eye actually makes her ugly, especially once others eventually see it, is going to be a big character development point. How other residents react to it will play a huge part in this and I'm excited for endless possibilities.

What aspects of this game and/or its setting are you most interested in having this character engage with? The combination/contrast of indelible atmospheric horror and many of the residents trying their best to make things better for each other in spite of everything is my jam, especially for a character who barely knows who she is or what she wants. Pudding is going to some combination of hit the ground running with it - her own home is a horrific candy-colored dystopia filled with cheerful residents, what else is new? - and be baffled by genuine interpersonal kindness amid a kind of horror without a tea party mask taken on. She's also going to have the totally new experience of choosing whether and how much to get involved in the overarching story of her new home because she wants to, rather than obeying orders. Brand new experiences balanced against familiar bleakness and weariness is gonna be a lot of fun to explore.

How does your character generally get along with other people? I. Uh. This needs a bulleted list.
  • For most of her life, Pudding has put on a perfect yamato nadeshiko mask. Everyone who knows her on her home archipelago, with the exception of the people who know her most intimately, think this is her true persona. She's kind, sweet, helpful to a fault, constantly compassionate, and in general a darling who is easy to love and difficult to dislike. She is eerily good at maintaining this persona and fooling all but the most distrustful people with it. Even then, she is often able to win those people over, at least grudgingly. She is easy to get along with, easy to like, and does her best to make everyone around her happy.

  • Pudding learned early due to interpersonal trauma that no one is to be trusted: not only other children but her own mother called her third eye ugly and creepy. Other children called her a three-eyed monster and cut her bangs to reveal the third eye and mock her for it. She reached a breaking point where she began literally stabbing other children - likely including some members of her own family, as her mother actively encourages all of her children to have hatred and grudges including against one another in order to make them stronger and more willing to fight to survive - for mocking her. Her "true" personality - or the one she believes to be true - is vicious and cruel, reveling in mocking others as relentlessly as she was mocked. It is possible that she actually killed all the civilians, as no one outside her family today remembers this side of her. Those who know this side of her - in canon, only family (and her two homunculus friends/familiars) - are treated to nasty mean jokes, mocking expressions and imitations of detested people (read: everyone), and a generally vicious and arrogant demeanor. She even speaks more crudely and harshly - if her public face is yamato nadeshiko, her private face is a sukeban, or crude but feminist gang punk.

  • When Sanji called her third eye beautiful and clearly meant it, Pudding's entire worldview was turned upside-down. When he was around, suddenly her personality was a rollercoaster with comedically wide and violent mood swings: she couldn't control whether she wanted to moon over him or kill him (for embarrassing her? daring to be nice to her? ruining her veneer/persona? all of the above???). This spilled over to how she reacted to literally everyone around her. While this is currently a one-off phenomenon, she has experienced it at her canonpoint and is deeply questioning everything about herself and her beliefs. How she reacts to other people when stressed will likely pull from this in some fashion.

What is your character's mental state upon entering the game? Oh you know just the usual rollercoaster -

A combination of still heartbroken by having to split from Sanji, still emotionally raw from everything she experienced on her "wedding day" including being shaken to her core about who or what her real personality/feelings are, hysterically joyous upon realizing she's no longer under her mother's tyrannical thumb, and (I mean this both literally and in regards to psychiatric/personality definitions) a bipolar mix of eager and distrustful of people from strange worlds who may or may not treat her like she's used to being treated (in every way that means).

Skills/Abilities: Pudding's Abilities and Powers section at fandom.com
  • Pirate Navigator: Authority over lower-ranking members of Big Mom's crew. Like most seafarers in her world, no difficulty adjusting from sea legs to land legs and vice versa. Familiar with ship terminology and functioning. Generally at-ease on ships and in plotting ship courses. Able to hand-draw simplified maps of familiar places from memory. Knowledge of how weather and current patterns affect courses and how to adjust for them.

  • Three-Eye Tribe bloodline: It's highly likely that Pudding's keen eyesight and observational skills are further bettered by her lineage and third eye, which would naturally afford greater depth of field vision. Being able to spot Sanji even when he was so fast no one else did is impressive even by her world's standards. She may also have a latent ability to read her world's dead language, which on mod discretion may mean she possesses the same ability and/or natural knack for other archaic or alien languages that may come up in-game.

  • Willpower: Able to withstand a sort of "supreme force of will" AOE employable by only people who possess the latent ability in-world; the AOE drives most people to unconsciousness and even the strong-willed to their knees, but Pudding can withstand one of these attacks from one of the strongest/most fearsome Top Four pirates in her world. Similarly, she stayed conscious during a screaming fit of her mother's, which is sonically deafening and horrifying to the point that it, too, makes most normal people pass out. Both of these are canon benchmark measures of being strong-willed and able to overcome fear and unease.

  • Master of Deceit: Somewhat covered in plans / engagements / interactions above: extremely skilled in acting/deception when pretending to be sweet, caring, and harmless. This is a long-cultivated persona she can adopt naturally, even when her personal feelings are at sharp odds with how she's acting. She's also a skilled seductress with a natural aptitude for fooling men in particular with her charm and with traditionally/stereotypically feminine weaknesses and beauty. She can cry at will and is adept at mimicry.

  • Culinary Expert: Arguably the best chocolatier in her entire world. She claims to be second to her older sister Lola and as such refuses to accept Lola's former title as Minister (strongest crew members and overseers in Big Mom's crew and kingdom), though as this was said while she was being deceitfully charming it's unclear whether this is true humility or acting sweet to keep up appearances to the locals. Shown to be extremely adept at baking in general and said to have advanced non-sweets-based culinary knowledge as well.

  • Marksmanship: Able to successfully shoot a technologically advanced human whose speed and reflexes far outmatch all normal and many advanced humans. (Limit: Unable to shoot someone with extremely high-level supernatural aura-sensing and reflexes even point-blank.) Particular expertise with her Walker .36 Caliber Percussion revolver.

  • Blades: Basic aptitude with knives as weapons. Has wielded them since a young child, and while she was acting when she brandished one at the Straw Hats originally, even then she clearly knew what she was doing with it.

  • Devil Fruit: Memo Memo no Mi / Memo-Memo Fruit: Pudding is able to physically reach into other people's heads and pull out a "roll of film" that serves as all their visual memories as seen through their eyes. She can edit this film as easily and simply as editing mundane physical film reels, using scissors to make the cuts but able to fuse strips together without the use of outside adhesive. It is easier to paste in memories she has extracted from other people using this power - for example, she pasted the removed memory of a soldier being shot in a skirmish into one character's head to replace the memory of Pudding shooting said character herself - but she is able to make these memories up out of whole cloth. She created a false memory of her wedding cake being ruined by rain to replace the truth of it being demolished by a character, and pasted this in 31 separate cooks' memories. She keeps a battery of these stolen memories for replacements, possibly storing them in her room. While the affected person has to be held down or caught unawares in order for her to begin using this power - the same as with any physical attack - they are stunned while their "film roll" is pulled out of their heads. This power only affects the person she is tampering with directly and has no ability to edit the memories of other persons who experienced the same event; each person must be tampered with individually. As such, other observers may tell the affected persons that their replaced memories are false. The affected persons may also piece together themselves that the memories are false based on their other memories, contradictory information and evidence, etc.

With this fruit, Pudding is also capable of producing intangible filaments that startle anyone they touch into experiencing flashbacks of previous memories, distracting them. This can be the person's own memories, or past memories of anyone who has donated life force to the person, homunculus, etc. in question.

Flaws/Weaknesses:
  • Human: Other than the third eye and devil fruit powers, Pudding is in every other way a normal 16-year-old girl, and possesses all the same squishy-human weaknesses. She is not shown to be particularly athletic or strong.

  • Devil Fruit weaknesses: Devil Fruit users are "hated" by the sea. If a user is submerged at least halfway in standing water - moving water such as rain, showers, glasses of water, waves rolling across solid surfaces, etc., do not have this effect, nor does simply becoming soaked on dry land - they "become a hammer," i.e. sink like a rock. They also suffer a physically drained feeling as well as muscle weakness and fatigue, become incapable of using activated devil fruit abilities, and lose most ability to move their own limbs. Presumably because One Piece's planet is even more so "mostly water" than Earth, this is limited not only to seawater, but any standing water whatsoever, including baths and hot springs: it's as much that "hated by the sea" is as much an idiom as it is that all water comes from the sea as a source. Items like Seastone which have the same radio wavelength as the sea affect Devil Fruit users exactly as being partially submerged would. Devil Fruit users are explicitly unable to swim.

  • "Her personality is like a rollercoaster": Since Sanji startled the hell out of her and was genuinely kind to her even after seeing her third eye - and found the "creepy" thing beautiful, no less! - Pudding has been thrown for a loop. Her emotional self-control and abilities of deceit when he's not around still seem to be top-notch, but the switch has been thrown and she's more likely to break down under stress in the future. When she gets like this she can't control whether she lets out her true emotions or "defaults" back to psychotic sukeban/yandere mode, partially because showing her true feelings is embarrassing, partially because she's flustered and protecting herself with callousness.

  • Hubris: While she at the same time believes that her third eye actually is creepy (to an extent), Pudding also has a very high opinion of herself. If the way she talks to Reiju in canon during the scene which sets up and describes her powers is any indication, she has a habit of mocking her victims to their faces and boasting about her acting skills before tampering with their memories. She thinks there's no reason not to, since she'll remove their memory of her boasting as easily as the memories she's going to muck around with already, without considering that she might be observed or overheard. She gets high praise from the public for her cultivated persona, which only makes her that much more convinced that her skills are flawless, and from the family members who know her secret for being skillful, which boosts her ego. She in fact seeks out this attention and the opportunities to grandstand as a way to overshadow her "creepy" eye and the fact that it makes her otherwise beautiful appearance "ugly."

  • Pervert: Oh look, a hypocrite. Pudding is secretly a gigantic pervert and susceptible to the "high blood pressure" "lovable pervert" anime tropes of nosebleeds, fainting, becoming so red in the face she steams and/or catches fire, etc. In general she keeps a handle on this, but Sanji made her go haywire, so this is a theoretical possibility otherwise. She is a hormonal 16-year-old girl. Obsessions set this off in the same way overt displays do; for example, Sanji's cooking abilities made her go heart-eyed and steam at the face.

  • Sanji: Absolute weakness. She went against her (terrifying, abusive, controlling, could and would kill her own children) mom for him, she betrayed her entire family for him, she goes weak-kneed for him. She is completely in love with him. She doesn't think he can do no wrong, but she sees him as a completely kind-hearted, genuine, Purely Good person. She kissed him because she couldn't stand to let him go without doing so, but stole his memory of the event because she knew that he would be tempted to stay behind with her or take her along with him if he kept it. She knew both would get him killed, and let him go.

  • Phobias: A Devil Fruit user's healthy fear of drowning. The rest of this section is entirely headcanon. Bugs (just like Sanji, whose phobia is canon). Cannibalism. Being exposed as a fraud (in any of myriad ways, but especially anything that would get her mocked like she was in childhood). People she loves finding her repulsive. Choking (on e.g. food, not being strangled). Sociophobia.

Personality: Pudding is layers upon layers of dual-natured. (Yes I know what I said.) In theory she has two concrete personalities, one the sweet darling good-girl mask, one her "true" self that is vicious and arrogant and mean. When she's trying in vain to shoot him after the initial plans went sour, Pudding exclaims to Sanji that she's always been good at deceiving people, and he gently asks if one of those people might be herself. That's the truth of it: The monster is no more who she really is than the sweetheart. When she's overcome with genuine emotion, she doesn't know how to feel or act. Very young Pudding was a sweet child who wanted friends; abuse made her mean and cruel. She lived there for most of her life, but that doesn't mean that's who she really is. At her core, Pudding wants nothing more than to be seen and heard and told it's okay to be who she really is. When, instead of being repulsed upon seeing it up close, Sanji exclaimed genuinely (blush and all) that her eye was beautiful, that shook her to her core. All her life she had been called creepy, ugly, and repulsive, but here was someone with no reason to lie and every expectation of being horrified who told her the opposite. The very idea that she could be seen as beautiful - that she could be loved - brought her to her knees with tears. I've covered the rollercoaster in other sections. Pudding is a good person somewhere underneath all the rubble, but she has done horrible things in the name of being praised, loved, attended to. She spent most of her life being her mom's good little girl (that is, obedient to her mother's insane and evil plans and whims) because all she wanted was acceptance. She would like nothing more than for her family to love her, but every little praise eventually comes with a side of how creepy her third eye is. Experience tells her this is universal; Sanji shocked her with the idea that it might not be. How she deals with her own world post-Sanji is going to be a long balancing act and a lot of self-observation. She's gotten a taste of the idea that there might be people out there who don't find the raw bare truths of her existence gross, and in Beacon she will try very, very coltishly to maybe seek that out again.
